Week 5- Integrating Computer-Generated Poetry Into My Work
This week I learned how to create randomized poetry based on strings of adjectives, nouns and verbs and managed to integrate that into my randomized drawings. I felt like the drawings on their own were very interesting and intriguing but they didn't feel relatable enough; they almost felt alien. So, incorporating poetry was a way to create a more human, relatable side to the pieces.
For the time being the strings of words are fairly limited, but I can add/change words as & when I think of them. However ultimately I think I would like to create an algorithm which actually writes poetry; a program that can decipher some form of meaning/definition from words, utilize rhyming and construct a meaningful, delicate poem at the press of a button. I will be researching how I can achieve that somewhere down the line as, although I have learned a lot, I still have a lot left to learn about coding.
Although the drawings & poems are totally random in their own right, they sometimes, by complete chance, work together. For example; if the poem talks about water then sometimes the drawing will be blue. This is totally random so somewhere down the line I would like to take control of this a bit more so that the drawing & poem intertwine even more.
I did have some hiccups along the way that created some unwanted outcomes, eg- writing the words all over the canvas, one-by-one, until the screen was eventually covered in this entanglement for center stage: words vs drawing. Accidents like this keep reminding me of the possibilities of this medium and not to restrict myself to a set of rules or boundaries.
I have attached photographs of the code I am using, including the strings of words, as well as some of the outcomes I am particularly happy with. For me, the magic of this all being completely random still hasn't worn off; being able to watch something be constructed in front of your very eyes feels so natural and soothing; like watching a painter paint or a sculptor sculpt.
