Week 14- Continuation
Coming off the high of inspiration of last week I was excited to jump in head first and keep creating these algorithmic, human drawings. The outcomes I had gathered so far intrigued me and others that I had shown them to, so this week I decided to just keep meandering down the same path.
I made the conscious decision to not change anything about my approach this week as I felt that the very nature of these drawings are constantly changing and shifting so they need to be able to breathe and change as they wish, not as I wish. In many ways the process and the outcome is vastly more important than the artist when it comes to this body of work. It is not an exploration of me, my thoughts or ideas. It is exploring this connection between algorithm and nature, allowing the algorithm to run indefinitely regardless of what comes out.
The outcomes this week were vaguely similar to last weeks, but the closer you look the more you notice these minute differences. It is the scale of the differences that intrigue me; to the untrained eye these drawings may all look the same and blur into one. But, to me, the scale of the differences is utterly intriguing, each form has such a natural feel to it, like a plant growing towards the light, like an eagle choosing it's flight path way up in the sky. There is something eerily natural about these outcomes that are, at their core, algorithmic in the sense that they are drawn following a set of instructions and do not stray away from that.
Aesthetically and scale-wise there is certainly some work that needs to be done. If these drawings were to be exhibited in a physical space they would need to be far more engulfing and enveloping, almost allowing the viewer to step through the canvas and enter the drawing to eventually see a part of themselves. For now, I am happy and excited with what's happening within these pieces and this project overall but I certainly do need to begin thinking about exhibition spaces and how these outcomes could be tweaked for a more engaging viewing experience.
