Week 15- Collaboration

This week marked the beginning of a new collaboration project. The collaborators consisted of myself, Laura, Miya and Luke, we made the decision to all come together as a group because of our intertwining interests, ideas and styles. We each have a completely different art style but many of our key themes and ideas in our work are shared so we believed it would be a good time to bring them all together and see what comes out.

We began the project by hosting a group meeting where we all discussed some themes and ideas that we are interested in, this quickly brought up a plethora of intriguing topics/themes and we started the process of whittling them down to ensure a concise project. We began the project by each delving into the idea of the glitch, randomness, portals and the uncanny.

We all went off and made our own individual works based on these themes, which was my main focus this week. I wanted to incorporate the surrealistic nature of the outcomes from my main project so far so I decided to place these abstract forms in a landscape setting; acting as a monolith, or a portal to another universe.

Something I hadn't experimented with so far was the use of colour within these drawings, so I took this as the perfect opportunity to do so. I thought that the usage of colour would give this piece a better sense of place.

I think I was right in thinking this, the colour created a sense of relatability within the piece and also helped solidify a focal point and the rest of the group seemed to agree with these points. Throughout this first week of ideas generation and feedback I have definitely felt more confident to try new things and discuss different, unfamiliar ideas which will hopefully boil over into my personal projects too.

I also experimented with inverting my drawing. Whilst I was happy with how this came out I did feel as if it lacked an element of depth. Although the rest of the group seemed to enjoy this outcome I was never 100% sold on it myself.

Overall this week has been incredibly helpful, after not being in university in a physical sense in so long it was a treat to be able to work collaboratively with people who's artworks inspire me. I'm excited about what I managed to make this week and am excited to discover how this may intersect with everybody else's works.
