Week 18- Re-evaluating My Work
Going back to working solo and with a greater focus on my personal project I have once again taken the time to stand back and rethink my work. Through my collaboration work I was introduced to many new themes and ideas, many of which inspired me greatly and I wanted to introduce into my own project.
The main theme that inspired me is, of course, the glitch. Miya introduced the idea of the glitch within art to me and since then I have been researching and experimenting with this idea. I was drawn to the glitch because of the unpredictability; my entire project has its roots in the unpredictable and the random. Starting off working with actual computer algorithms and moving into the human algorithm these things are all subject to the glitch.
My current works are reminiscent of the works I put into our collaboration; utilizing my algorithmic drawing style on paper, scanning it in and allowing the piece to be subject to the glitch; a software that I input the scanned drawing into and the output is subject to a random glitch effect. This ties back into the relinquishing of authorship within my original work in this project; giving the computer back the power. I put in hours drawing these intricate pieces only to have them vandalized by the glitch.
The indistinguishable nature of these glitch effects adds an air of curiosity to the final outcomes, leaving the viewer pondering about not only the outcome but the process as a whole. I'm excited by these outcomes because they continue this long-standing relationship and collaboration that I have with the machine/computer. Aesthetically the outcomes can be very hit or miss because I don't have much control over how they look but I believe that's something to embrace rather than hide.
Moving forward I intent to continue this exploration of the glitch, working out how I can give the glitch more power, less power and how/where this collaboration might go. I want this to remain a collaboration, not just a human using a software. And in order for this idea of collaboration to remain authentic I must never hide or discredit the work of the machine.
